Does a Rural-Urban Gradient Affect Beetle Assemblages in an Arid Ecosystem?

چکیده

Urbanization affects all elements of the pre-urban environment, including soils, hydrology, vegetation, and microclimate. Recently, Saudi Arabia has experienced rapid urbanization growth. Thus, country’s biodiversity been threatened. In Riyadh region, beetle assemblages were assessed along a rural-suburban-urban gradient. A total 2791 individuals from 94 species belonging to seven families collected at 15 sites three different gradients in Wadi Hanifa, which runs for length 120 km northwest southeast. Tenebrionidae dominated abundance (60.1%) richness (38%). Beetle abundance, evenness, diversity not among habitats; however, was higher rural habitats. Detrended correspondence “DCA” canonical “CCA” analyses showed distinct differences gradients. intensity, soil variables, land cover significantly correlated with CCA axis 1, while elevation flora 2. The most critical operating environmental variables Hanifa buildings, elevation, organic carbon, litter cover, depth, as well plant such Launaea capitata, Lycium shawii, Alhagi graecorum, Heliotropium currasavicum. Ten our study associated urban habitats, six suburban Consequently, expanding areas may negatively affect composition beetles result loss some native species.

Changes in carabid beetle assemblages across an urban-rural gradient in Japan

As part of the international Globenet project, carabid beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) were collected using pitfall traps from four urban, four suburban and four rural sites in Hiroshima City, Japan, during the 2001 summer season. In agreement with expectation, carabid abundance and species richness decreased significantly from rural to urban sites. Furthermore, no large, and only few individua...

How Habitat Change and Rainfall Affect Dung Beetle Diversity in Caatinga, a Brazilian Semi-Arid Ecosystem

The aim of the present study was to evaluate how dung beetle communities respond to both environment and rainfall in the Caatinga, a semi-arid ecosystem in northeastern Brazil. The communities were sampled monthly from May 2006 to April 2007 using pitfall traps baited with human feces in two environments denominated "land use area" and "undisturbed area." Abundance and species richness were com...

Changing Bee and Hoverfly Pollinator Assemblages along an Urban-Rural Gradient

BACKGROUND The potential for reduced pollination ecosystem service due to global declines of bees and other pollinators is cause for considerable concern. Habitat degradation, destruction and fragmentation due to agricultural intensification have historically been the main causes of this pollinator decline. However, despite increasing and accelerating levels of global urbanization, very little ...

Soil N2O and NO emissions from an arid, urban ecosystem

[1] We measured soil nitrogen (N) cycling and fluxes of N2O and NO in three land-use types across the metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona. Urbanization increased N2O emissions compared to native landscapes, primarily due to the expansion of fertilized and irrigated lawns. Fluxes of N2O from lawns ranged from 18 to 80 mg N m!2 h!1 and were significantly larger than managed xeric landscapes (2....

Distribution of Wild Mammal Assemblages along an Urban–Rural–Forest Landscape Gradient in Warm-Temperate East Asia

Urbanization may alter mammal assemblages via habitat loss, food subsidies, and other factors related to human activities. The general distribution patterns of wild mammal assemblages along urban-rural-forest landscape gradients have not been studied, although many studies have focused on a single species or taxon, such as rodents. We quantitatively evaluated the effects of the urban-rural-fore...
